Frequently asked questions
To begin with, we prefer to get an early start, due to the constraints of morning traffic challenges. We are also well aware that you have your morning routine to attend to, so we ask that you move your vehicles each morning prior to our work commencing, so that we can gain easy access to your property.
We always endeavour to keep our noise levels to a minimum and promise to be considerate. We will also ensure never to arrive late or leak oil or diesel all over your driveway. You can also rest assured that all our employees are adequately trained and professional, and are always well-dressed and neat. We are committed to maintaining safe work environments at each of our sites.
When choosing a reputable drilling company, there are a few aspects that you need to keep in mind. When partnering with a legitimate borehole drilling company, you can look forward to excellent service and value for money, and enjoying great returns on your investment for years to come.
Poor drilling techniques can result in cracking of walls, plaster, tiles and lifting of paving. What can I do to prevent this? Employ a driller with a long and reputable track record and insist on him having sufficient insurance.
Don’t believe, for a minute that anyone has 90-100% success rate of finding water – that’s just blatant nonsense. You may want to believe them but do so at your own peril. Drilling for water is risky business – come to terms with the fact that a drill rig is a casino on wheels. The risk of making a usable borehole belongs to the contractor, the risk of ground conditions and there being water belongs to the landowner. If you are unlucky, you could end up with a dry borehole.
A correctly executed and professionally interpreted (hydrogeologist) yield test will allow for correct sizing of the pump and a balanced long serving borehole system.
If you and your family are going to be using the water, its highly recommended to determine what is in your water. Most water issues can be treated. Luckily most groundwaters in the Gauteng residential areas are largely unaffected by man’s adverse activities.
Groundwater, as the name implies, comes from the ground. Small particles become entrained and suspended in the water. Particle filtration is common for boreholes. Treatment is usually undertaken to alter, reduce/eliminate undesirable elements which are dissolved in the groundwater – most of them naturally. The purpose of treatment is to ensure that the water you consume is fit for human consumption and will not harm your plumbing.
Most groundwater in the greater Joburg area is aggressive which will corrode your steel / copper plumbing with time. Correct treatment of the water can reduce / eliminate these issues.
You are most welcome to ask us any questions on boreholes – we will gladly share our professional knowledge with you
choosing a reputable drilling company faqs
Ask the prospective contractor to prove how long they have been in business? Time in the game makes your name. Unfortunately there are unethical people in our industry but they don’t last the test of time. So your best chance of a trouble free relationship with your contractor is to select one who can prove that he has been in service for some time.
Phone the BWA on 011-447 0853, or visit their website at www.bwa.co.za and check the drilling company’s reputation with the association. Why is this important? Simply because you have no recourse to take with a contractor not associated with the BWA, should there ever be a dispute. EDRS is a full member of the Borehole Water Association.
Contact the BWA (082-3306538) and verify the information your prospective contractor is telling you.
Ask your prospective contractor if he can prove that the equipment he uses is actually his+
If there is any doubt or hesitation to this question – suspect a middle man scenario! Warning bells & lights should be flashing red.
Your drilling quote should be itemised with costs for the different drilling diameters and casings, etc., in an easily understandable fashion. Discuss the quote with the contractor and iron out any uncertainties.
Since no one knows the depth of the borehole or the casings that will be installed before the drilling process is initiated, it is impossible to determine the cost of the borehole before its completion. So don’t be duped into paying for it upfront.
A good drilling company should be able to complete the drilling in a matter of hours. No client wants a drill rig in their yard for days and days. Smaller operators using low pressure compressors of 14 to 17 bars will take longer to drill a hole than larger contractors. However, rest assured that EDRS has yet to drill for more than a day on a borehole shallower than 120m in the Gauteng suburban area over the past two years.
The last thing that you want is old equipment that will leak oil and diesel all over your property.
Beware of schemes that guarantee no water or the amount of water that you will receive when you drill. These “lock-in” contracts endeavour to force you into buying a pump for the dry hole, or a mismatched pump that is too weak and small.
Can the contracting company provide additional services, such as pump supply, chemical water and capacity testing, installation and commissioning? If they can’t, this could lead to additional contractors being required that will rack up the quote. EDRS provides a full turnkey service – from the drilling to the drinking.
When the rig leaves your yard, will you be left with a muddy mess to clean up?
Is the contractor a professional and reputable organisation? Can they accommodate the entrances to your property with the required equipment? How reliable and prompt is the contractor? These are all important aspects to consider when employing a drilling contractor for your domestic borehole.
Contact EDRS to learn more about our company, and to find answers to all these questions. We look forward to providing you with a comprehensive quote for all your domestic borehole drilling requirements.
